POKEMON GO AVAILABLE IN OLDS THANKS TO FREE COMMUNITY WIFI
Community owned WiFi service gives players PokeStops in public places
( OLDS, Alberta – July 18, 2016 ) Pokemon Go players in Olds don’t have to worry about the high cost of data because they have free access to the internet thanks to Mountain View Power, ONET and the Olds Institute. Olds Alberta offers free access to the internet via the community owned WiFi access points across town. Now that Pokemon Go is officially available in Canada here are some tips on how to get the most from this augmented reality game that is taking the world by storm.
“Centennial Park and Olds College campus are good spots in town for catching Pokemons”, according to the tech team at ONET, who provides and maintains the WiFi access points across Olds.
- To play Pokemon Go in Olds, we compiled a few tips on getting the most from our free community WiFi;
- Centennial Park in Uptowne Olds on the south end of 50th Avenue has wide coverage and it has been reported that Pokemon Go characters are showing up here;
- Wetlands Area at Olds College is a great spot to visit at any time but with free WiFi access it’s good for Pokemon Go according to reports we’ve heard;
- Olds College Campus offers free WiFi everywhere and PokeStops have been reported in some of the public spaces on the grounds;
- “Hunting” works the best in the areas of the community that offer free community WiFi including Uptowne and along Highway 27 west out to the Cornerstone Shopping centre. You will need to use the ‘lures module’ in these areas to attract the characters. If you wander around town you may lose connection as you jump from access point to access point so hang out somewhere and lure the characters in;
- Play safe don’t Pokemon Go and drive; Be respectful don’t trespass or cause those around you discomfort; Have fun, remember: it’s just a game!

Background Information:
Mountain View Power was founded in 2010 by the Olds Institute for Community & Regional Development as an innovative Community Sustainability Initiative. Mountain View Power retails electricity, natural gas and green generated power to residential, farming and small business located in the County of Mountain View. All profits from the company are used to fund and support community projects in the region.
In 2004, the Technology Committee of the Olds Institute began focusing on laying the foundation for ONET with the development of an Open Access Telecommunication Network. This network is now in place throughout the community and every resident and business in town has access to gigabit technology.
The Olds Institute was formed in 2001 by community leaders who realized they could achieve more together than they could apart. It is governed by a volunteer board of directors representing their four founding members and includes members of the community at large.
